A coworker recently recommended the 2014 documentary Tim’s Vermeer which chronicles the obsession of one man who sets out on a five-year project to see if the Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer, had used technology found today in modern cameras to create his classic paintings. Influenced by a David Hockney book Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters, Tim Jenison observed clues in Vermeer’s paintings that seemed to indicate that Vermeer had employed some pretty fancy technology to help him achieve the near-photographic quality his work was famous for, 150 years before the first recorded photograph was ever taken.

With a dizzying array of website tools, services and add-ons available to service and develop practically every possible need or desire a site owner may have, it’s often thought a site has to be complex by default in order to allow for it to grow. The more tools in the “toolbox” the better, right? Ideally, no. If you’re Russian, you probably know who Artemy Lebedev is. For others, I should say he’s an eccentric entrepreneur who angers a lot of people with posts on his blog and owns the biggest design studio in Russia. While the English version of the studio’s website showcases their work, the original Russian site brings out the owner’s personality—it can often anger and offend the unprepared (Artemy is a huge fan of cursing), but is also a great source of design knowledge. It is, after all, where I was introduced to design and learned about kerning, leading, and numerous do’s and don’ts.

I get some weird looks or comments from people when they find out that I use Pinterest. One popular comment is how it’s for recipes only. I think Pinterest deserves a little more respect than what it currently gets. I didn’t know much about it when I joined about three years ago. Now I relish the abundant amount of images and content about art, design, attire, food, music and even videos. It’s a way of self-expression, collecting the ideas and images that inspire me and pinning them to boards. It’s a great resource because the images link back to the original source on the web.
