EOG Resources, a North American-based oil and gas exploration and production company, had its best year in operational performance. During multiple brainstorming sessions with Herring and the EOG investor team, we discovered that the driving force behind the success was EOG’s distinctive culture. EOG’s entrepreneurial and collaborative teams have always been a sustainable competitive advantage for the company. This year, it was important to focus on this particular quality and communicate how this advantage fueled EOG’s 2019 accomplishments and how it would sustain their success long into the future.
To stand out from past reports, Herring created a simple yet unorthodox cover and type solution. The headline, “Culture Drives Sustainable Success”, was divided onto the front and back pages of the front cover to pique the reader’s interest, and encourage them to read on and interact with the book. By applying a fold-out cover, we were able to create more space to tell the entire story while continuing to print and bind efficiently. With a minimal color palette (borrowing the orange hue from the culture section on the EOG corporate website) and the lack of photography, we were able to maintain a streamlined design that drew emphasis on the most important information and data throughout the report.
